Reimagining a Family Home in Bushey

Project Details

“Planning constraints are often a key part of residential projects, requiring careful negotiation to achieve the right balance between ambition and compliance.”

This project reimagines a family home in Bushey through a combination of rear and front extensions and a new loft level — unlocking space across all floors and creating a brighter, more functional living environment.

The Transformation

Segmented layout → open-plan living space
Underused loft → new habitable floor
Dated frontage → refined, contemporary exterior

A generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living area forms the heart of the home, centred around a social island and connected directly to the garden.
The space is designed to feel open and sociable, while remaining practical for everyday use.
The result is a home that feels larger, lighter and better suited to modern life.

Exterior Expression

White rendered façade
Slate grey window frames
New pitched porch roof

A clean, modern identity that enhances the existing house without overpowering it.

Planning & Collaboration

Working closely with the clients, a young professional couple, the design evolved through a highly collaborative process.
The initial proposal was refused planning permission due to concerns around the scale of the loft extension and changes to the front elevation. Rather than compromising the overall vision, we worked closely with the client and planning consultants to refine the design.

Outcome

A cohesive, light-filled home tailored to the clients’ lifestyle — delivering both improved daily living and long-term value.
