“Reconfiguring existing space can be just as transformative as extending—unlocking light, flow and a more intuitive way of living.”
This project combines a single-storey rear extension with a full ground-floor reconfiguration, transforming a semi-detached house in Stevenage into a bright, open-plan family home with improved flow and stronger connections to the garden.
The Transformation
Cellular layout → Open-plan living environment
Limited daylight → Brighter interiors with rooflights and glazing
Fragmented circulation → Clear visual and physical continuity
The result is a more cohesive and adaptable living space designed around modern family life.
Living at the Centre
The kitchen forms the social heart of the home, organised around a central island that supports cooking, gathering and everyday living. The open arrangement creates a connected environment while maintaining subtle distinctions between spaces.
Material Expression
Brickwork matched to the existing house
Slimline anthracite aluminium framing
Minimal flat roof profile with refined detailing
The restrained material palette balances continuity with a quietly contemporary architectural character.
Light & Atmosphere
Rooflights and full-height glazing introduce natural light deep into the plan, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. Long views through the house strengthen the sense of openness and connection to the garden.
Project Highlights:
• Rear extension with full ground-floor reconfiguration
