“Careful renovation can preserve the character of a home while adapting it to contemporary living.”
This project transforms an existing rural dwelling in ArgeČ™, Romania, balancing traditional architectural character with the needs of modern family life.
The Transformation
Traditional rural dwelling → Contemporary family home
Limited interior functionality → Improved circulation and spatial flexibility
Small openings and darker interiors → Brighter spaces with enhanced natural light
The proposal creates a more open and connected living environment while maintaining the warmth and familiarity of the original structure.
Ground-floor extensions create larger living spaces and strengthen the connection to the surrounding landscape. A carefully integrated upper level adds new private accommodation while respecting the character of the existing home.
Respecting Rural Character
Retention of the original structural identity
Traditional pitched roof maintained
Contemporary reinterpretation of local architectural elements
Material & Architectural Expression
Timber, plaster and locally inspired finishes
Contemporary glazing and modern construction systems
Improved thermal performance and comfort
Material choices were carefully selected to preserve regional authenticity while enhancing durability, energy efficiency and everyday functionality.
Light-Filled Contemporary Living
Larger glazed openings and improved spatial organisation introduce a brighter and more welcoming atmosphere, while maintaining visual connections to the surrounding rural landscape.
