Wildlife Conservation Barn, Delaware

Project Details

“Architecture for educational environments requires a careful balance between functionality, visitor experience and animal welfare.”

This project proposes a new wildlife conservation barn in Frankford, Delaware, designed to expand an existing animal preserve through the creation of a larger educational and visitor-focused facility.

The scheme combines public engagement spaces with operational and animal care facilities — supporting guided tours, interactive learning experiences and hands-on encounters within a calm, natural setting.

The Vision

Existing small-scale facility → expanded visitor experience
Limited enclosure capacity → larger conservation environment
Traditional barn typology → contemporary educational destination

The new building is organised across two levels, combining animal enclosures, visitor circulation and staff facilities within a cohesive timber structure inspired by rural agricultural architecture.

At ground floor level, the project includes:
Gift shop and visitor reception
Internal and external animal enclosures
Animal preparation kitchen
Veterinary and clinic facilities
Guided circulation routes and encounter spaces

The first floor accommodates office and storage spaces, with visual connections overlooking the gift shop below — allowing staff supervision while maintaining openness throughout the building.

Material Expression

Natural timber façade
Stone base detailing
Exposed structural elements
Large glazed openings connecting interior and exterior spaces

The architectural language draws inspiration from traditional American barn structures while introducing a lighter and more contemporary spatial experience.

Covered external walkways and framed views create moments of interaction between visitors, landscape and animal habitats, encouraging a slower and more immersive educational journey.
